Provider's strengths and weaknesses

DirecTV has the most available HD channels including exclusive sports packages and all digital programming.  DirecTV is also generally the most costly.  As with other satellite providers, if a good rain storm comes up you may be without service.  It takes a lot of cloud cover however.  HD receivers are usually included but the HD DVR's can be costly, including a monthly fee.  HD enthusiast shouldn't be concerned as you get all the HD you can handle.  Packages Here

Dishnet has many of the national HD channels you would most likely watch.  Prices are generally lower compared with what you get.  You can also get HD DVR packages with no additional equipment cost.  DVR's also do not require two input cables.  There are fewer HD sports packages and some like NFL Sunday Ticket are not available.  Rain also affects reception.  Package Here

Time Warner Cable offers fewer national HD channels.  Sports are sparse and the price is still high.  You will have service 99.9% of the time though and unlike other services you can get multi-room systems without a monthly charge.  Equipment including DVR's are also normally included at no cost.  Bundle packages with phone and internet make for a bargain for a sufficient amount of HD channels with other services.

Comcast has the lowest amount of HD channels.  Being cable ran it's uptime is also 99.9% and unaffected by rain or clouds.  Comcast also has a bundle package including phone and the fastest home internet service.  Depending on your region Comcast may be your only cable alternative.  Prices (especially bundle prices) are much lower than competition but you give up many HD channels.
